Will Wheaton (Wesley Crusher from STtNG) has written a very good article about why Star Trek is absolutely awesome, and I couldn't agree with him more. He has many great points but the most important one, I think, is his discussion on how the movie pays attention to what has made Star Trek so successful for so long
Remakes and sequels are notorious for their stinkieness, and to have a movie that is a takeoff come out well is something to take notice of. For examples on how to do it badly, look at what Lucas did with Star Wars. Unlike Lucas, what Abrams has done is make a movie for the fans, and he hasn't done it subtly either. There are blatant nods to fandom throughout the movie – something I celebrated with the delighted fans in the theater around me. All in all, the movie comes across as a tribute to the Trek universe, as a way to keep the Enterprise's continuing mission bold and alive for fans old and new.
May Star Trek live long and prosper,
