I began using Music Monday as a trial of the hashtags on Twitter and as an offshoot of the work I do promoting my musician family at emPower Music & Arts. I really enjoy it now, as I get some fantastic music recommendations and have the joy of sharing some great music around too.
It's interesting how much the internet has changed the arts industry. You don't have to get signed or have an agent to get promoted anymore because the resources are available for you to do it yourself. If you're an artist and you're not using the 'net to promote your work you need to get with the program.
Six ways to promote your work online are:
Although I generally prefer Facebook, Myspace is really brilliant at this. You can add your music, blog about the lyrics, publish concert or gallery dates and more.
If you don't have a video, make one. Even quick clips done with a cell phone can get attention if done cleverly. Be sure to put a link to your website.
You do have a website, right? Right? You'll want a blog as part of this, too. I'll tell you why in another post.
Make your work accessible and the fans will come. Stream your music on a site such as LastFm, load your art onto DeviantArt.
Don't ask why, just do it. Twitter gives people one more place to find out about you.
Everywhere you are online should be linked back to everything else you have online. This helps the bots on the search engines find you so they can point the fans your direction.
Getting fans talking and sharing is the best promotion in the world, so make it easy on them. Help people find your work and give them a way to talk about it and they will introduce fans to you in markets you'd never reach on your own.
