Word Wednesday - Sagacious

For those of you who don't write, muses are those creative little voices that an artist's world revolves around. Muses are fickle beasties that come and go at whim, so I've taught myself to write without them. That's part of what writing exercises are, after all; it's learning the how of writing. I've trained myself into a methodical, one-foot-in-front-of-the-other writing process that works well for me. But when the muses are chatty, my writing is more “on”. The process falls away into pure creativity. Sometimes I'll have things pop into my head already written. It's something that defies scientific definition.

More maddening than writer's block is the muse that won't shut up. Plot bunny is a term stolen from fanfiction. It is essentially an idea that gnaws at a writer's soul until it gets written. Feeding a plot bunny by writing it out will help quiet its rabid gnawing, though, believe me, nothing encourages the little buggers to go away if they're determined to hole up in your brain.

So tonight, for word Wednesday I have a demonstration of this phenomenon, if you will. The word of the day is sagacious and the instant I read it this scrap of a story popped into my head. I tried to write something else, something that had a beginning and an ending that wrapped around each other. I kept coming back to this piece out of the middle of nothing instead. I don't know who the characters are, I don't know where this is going but I'm certain that a jump down the rabbit hole and feeding of the little plot bunny gnawing around down there will give me more of the story. I have other things demanding my attention right now so I'll see if I can get away with writing this much and leaving it to dangle.

As always, thanks for reading,

That smile makes her want to scream. Scream and smack the teeth right out of his skull. Sharp white teeth he's showing entirely too much of. The saccharine smile ends before it reaches his eyes, mocking her. Worse, he needn't say a word to do it. Smug, self-serving, sagacious son-of-a...

“You know,” he drawls, winking. “You're really beautiful when you're angry.”

Rage sizzles through her veins, white hot. She does scream, then, hands smacking wildly at him. At.

At, certainly, because nothing connects. Stupidly, she's allowed him to maneuver her into the cunning trap he's laid for her.
